The Johns Hopkins University (JHU)
The Johns Hopkins University is a world leader in biological research and the global biotechnology industry. Johns Hopkins graduate programs are designed for working professionals – delivering the rigorous and practical curriculum they need to advance their careers or academic ambitions. Johns Hopkins' Advanced Biotechnology Studies (ABS) Program is rooted in the multidisciplinary skills of basic research, drug discovery technologies, bioinformatics, regulatory affairs, and product commercialization that the industry demands. The program offers four master's programs, fellowships, and certificate programs.
University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC)
UMBC Continuing and Professional Studies (CPS) and the Training Centers offer high quality affordable training and collaboration to individuals and organizations. UMBC Training Centers deliver a variety of non-credit workforce training programs supporting the biotechnology industry including a unique non-credit certificate program focused on the regulatory aspects of bringing a biotechnology product to market. For individuals and organizations seeking graduate level programs, UMBC offers a Master of Professional Studies in Biotechnology.
University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute (UMBI)
The UMBI GMP Training and Biomanufacturing Program is a small scale contract manufacturing operation. The resources of the program are available to academic and commercial clients. The program has the equipment and capabilities to produce biological products under CGMP regulations for toxicology studies or Phase I clinical trials. Bioreactors and fermentors up to 100 liter scale are available for cell culture and bacterial or yeast fermentation. Products may be protein or nucleic acid, and viral or non-viral. Nanotechnology products can also be produced. Final product may be bulk or filled, including lyophilization. In addition to 6,000 squared feet of manufacturing clean rooms, the program has QC labs for support of production and assay development. There are process development labs for development of optimized production processes and assay procedures.
University of Maryland (College Park)
Mtech’s Biotechnology Research and Education Program (BREP) has a long history of workforce training in many aspects of bioprocessing for Maryland biotech companies. All training is done at the Bioprocess Scale-Up Facility (BSF) at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Key offerings include: Fermentation Workshop (with or without lab), Downstream Processing & Protein Purification Workshop and Customized Workforce Training. Mtech also provides courses in entrepreneurship in the life sciences at the undergraduate and graduate levels. These courses are intended to foster the education of entrepreneurs in the life sciences and the creation of new life sciences ventures.
In the Biotechnology program, students gain experience with cutting edge scientific techniques in both biological and chemical fields. Students are exposed to the business concepts involved in bringing a product from development in the research laboratory to production for diagnostic or treatment purposes. Most courses are offered at least once per year, with flexibility to offer a course outside of its regular rotation schedule if there is a demand. Stevenson also coordinates with UMBC and Towson University to provide customized training for area biotech companies.
Towson University offers a bachelor's of science degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry and Bioinformatics (MB3). This is an excellent degree for students considering careers in biotechnology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, cell biology, genetics, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, or virology. In addition, the actual practice of science - scientific research - plays a central role in this program. All faculty in the program are active scientists, and students are exposed to scientific research through a mentoring program throughout their study. Prior to graduation, all students are required to carry out an independent research project in order to complete the major.

Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC)
CCBC prepares students for the intensive research, government oversight, recordkeeping, and specialized production techniques that today’s biotechnology sector requires. Biotechnology and biomanufacturing programs at CCBC are designed to provide students with a foundation in biotechnology concepts focusing on the bioscience laboratory. Students may choose to enroll in the certificate or A.A.S. degree program in biotechnology and biomanufacturing. Short-term intensive courses offered include: Introduction to Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), Advanced cGMP, Laboratory Documentation, Aseptic Processing and Change Control.
Frederick Community College (FCC)
FCC’s Customized Training Programs provide training opportunities tailored to the unique needs of each company. The Bioprocessing Technology program prepares individuals to work as process operators in biological products manufacturing facilities. Students combine basic science and communication skills, manufacturing technologies and good manufacturing practices in the course of study. Students develop a strong basic science foundation with a sound understanding of the major technologies employed in the industry.
Hagerstown Community College
The Biotechnology program is designed to prepare students for entry-level technician positions in biomedical, research, and industrial laboratory areas. Depending on a person’s academic background or work experience, the Biotechnology technician-in-training may complete the one year Biotechnology certificate or the two-year Associate of Applied Science degree in Biotechnology. Some of the courses include Introduction to Biotechnology, Microbiology, Cell Biology, and Biomanufacturing. Customized training programs can be designed to accommodate the specific needs of the area’s life sciences companies.
The Biotechnology Programs are designed to integrate the theory taught in lecture with hands-on practical skills as they apply to the biotechnology industry. The laboratory protocols used are the same as those used in real world research labs. We emphasize the development and understanding of basic laboratory skills in the areas of cell culture, instrumentation, genomics, proteomics, and immunology. The non-credit, workforce development program offers short courses or workshops (generally less than one week) to address specific training needs in the biotechnology industry. The workshops can cover either laboratory skills or non-laboratory issues such as Cell Culture Basics, Essential DNA and RNA Technology, Good Laboratory Practice, and Teams and Teaming.

Technical Institutes and Organizations
BioTechnical Institute of Maryland, Inc. (BTI)
BTI is a non-profit, independent organization whose mission is to bridge the gap between good people and good jobs in biotech in our own backyard. BTI graduates have experience and exposure in cGMP-based documentation, aseptic technique, clean room gowning and cleaning, cell culture, molecular biology, autoclaving, animal care, micropipette use, laboratory math and solution making.
BSC serves the biotech industry by providing education in relevant lab topics through a series of three- and four-day hands-on workshops. The workshops are designed to provide a solid understanding of specific topics through classroom presentation and significant hands-on training. Current topics include Introduction to Animal Cell Culture, the Polymerase Chain Reaction, Basic Molecular Biology, Protein Expression and Purification and Baculovirus Expression Systems. In 2009, BSC will introduce workshops in Quantitative PCR and Stem Cell Culture.
Parenteral Drug Association (PDA)
The PDA is the leading global provider of science, technology and regulatory information and education for the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical community. In keeping with its 60-year history of promoting the growth of pharmaceutical science and technology, PDA introduced the PDA Training and Research Institute (PDA-TRI). TRI’s broad curriculum to enhance professional development includes: Aseptic Processing, Biotechnology, Environmental Monitoring, Filtration, Microbiology, Quality/Regulatory Affairs/Training, and Validation.
